About the museum

Bevrijdingsmuseum Maastricht brings the past to life through images, sound, light and visualisation. Not a classic exhibition with showcases, but a lively experience. You walk through various scenes that give you an impression of how people interacted during the Second World War. Betrayal, violence and oppression, but also perseverance, connection and helpfulness. You feel like you are right in the middle of it. The aim of the museum is to make young people in particular think about the events of that time. The scenes make you think: are these situations from the past or are they still happening today?

Each scene represents a specific time, place or situation during the Second World War. The segregation of the Jews, the bombings, the war at sea: all these things come to the fore. All important moments that had a great impact on society.

The scenes last no more than four minutes, but there is so much to see and experience. Hopefully, when you get home in the evening and sit around the dinner table, or when you discuss the visit at school afterwards, the stories of what you have seen will come back to you. And then our aim will have been achieved: to start a conversation about what is happening in the world then and now, and how to deal with it.
